Tummy Tuck Recovery Guide

What to Expect After Abdominoplasty

Recovering from a tummy tuck is about more than simply waiting for time to pass. The first several weeks are an important period of healing when swelling, mobility, scar formation, and activity progression all play a role in your final outcome.

Understanding Your Recovery

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) often includes removal of excess skin, tightening of the abdominal muscles (rectus plication), and may also be combined with liposuction.

Because every surgery is different, your surgeon's instructions should always take priority. However, most patients can expect swelling, tightness, bruising, and limited mobility during the first several weeks after surgery.

What Is Normal After Surgery?

During the first few weeks, it is common to experience:

  • Swelling of the abdomen and surrounding areas

  • Bruising

  • Tightness across the abdomen

  • Difficulty standing fully upright

  • Mild discomfort with movement

  • Fatigue

  • Temporary numbness around the incision

  • Limited mobility the first 1-2 weeks

These symptoms typically improve gradually as healing progresses.

General Recovery Timeline

Phase I: Protection & Early Mobility (Weeks 0–2)

Goals

  • Protect healing tissues

  • Control swelling

  • Improve circulation

  • Begin gentle mobility

Typical Activities

  • Short walks throughout the day

  • Deep breathing exercises

  • Gentle ankle pumps

  • Slowly transitioning from sitting to standing

  • Compression garment use as directed

Precautions

  • Stand and walk slightly hunched over

  • No overhead reaching

  • No heavy lifting or strenuous activity

  • No core engagement

Phase II: Controlled Recovery (Weeks 2–4)

Goals

  • Improve mobility

  • Restore upright posture

  • Continue swelling reduction

  • Restore normal movement

  • Initiate scar management

Typical Activities

  • Longer walks

  • Gentle lower extremity strengthening

  • Functional movement based exercises

    • Sit to stands

    • heel raises

  • Continued compression

  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage as indicated

Phase III: Progressive Strengthening (Weeks 4-6)

Goals

  • Restore mobility

  • Progress functional strengthening

  • Continue scar management

Depending on your surgeon's protocol, gentle scar mobilization and progressive strengthening may begin once healing allows.

After 6 Weeks

Most patients gradually resume:

  • Light resistance training

  • Progressive core rehabilitation

Your surgeon will determine when higher-level exercise is appropriate.
