Kinesiology Taping for Post-Surgical Swelling: What Does the Research Show?

Kinesiology tape (K-tape) is commonly used in physical therapy clinics for a wide variety of purposes. However, many of the traditional claims surrounding K-tape—including correcting joint alignment, improving joint stability, altering muscle activation, or improving athletic performance—have not been consistently supported by research.

One area where K-tape has shown more promising clinical evidence is as an adjunct for managing acute postoperative swelling.

Research has evaluated K-tape following several types of surgery, with the majority of controlled postoperative studies reporting reductions in edema. More recent randomized trials and meta-analyses have strengthened the evidence in certain postoperative populations.

Importantly, K-tape has also been studied alongside manual lymphatic drainage (MLD). One randomized clinical trial found that combining MLD with K-tape produced greater reductions in postoperative edema than either intervention alone.

Evidence also exists specifically within plastic surgery, including a study following liposuction that demonstrated significantly less edema in taped areas during postoperative recovery.

Research Summaries

10 of 12 controlled postoperative studies in a systematic review favored K-tape for reducing swelling.
• A meta-analysis of 16 RCTs involving 842 operated knees found significant reductions in postoperative knee edema.
• A randomized trial of 99 postoperative patients found MLD + K-tape produced significantly greater reductions in edema than either treatment alone.
• A second clinical trial involving 45 TKA patients found that both K-tape and MLD significantly reduced early postoperative edema and pain compared with exercise alone, with moderate-to-large effect sizes; benefits persisted through two weeks.
• A plastic-surgery study found significantly less edema at 14 and 21 days after liposuction in taped areas.
• A 70-trial meta-analysis found significant benefits for acute facial edema and lower-extremity edema, although overall certainty of evidence remained low.

The Bottom Line

Current research suggests that kinesiology taping may help reduce acute postoperative swelling, and the majority of controlled postoperative studies have reported favorable results. Evidence also suggests that combining K-tape with manual lymphatic drainage may provide greater short-term postoperative edema reduction than either intervention alone.

For appropriately selected postoperative patients, kinesiology taping can therefore be considered a useful adjunct within a broader swelling-management and rehabilitation program, particularly when paired with interventions such as manual lymphatic drainage, appropriate movement and other individualized postoperative care.
