Hyperbaric Oxygen After Cosmetic Surgery: Does It Help?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is becoming increasingly popular after procedures such as tummy tucks, liposuction, facelifts, and breast surgery. But what does it actually do?

How Does It Work?

HBOT involves breathing nearly 100% oxygen inside a pressurized chamber. The increased pressure allows significantly more oxygen to dissolve directly into the blood plasma and reach healing tissues.

This may be helpful after surgery because tissue trauma, swelling, and disruption of small blood vessels can temporarily reduce oxygen delivery.

Higher tissue oxygen levels may:

  • Support wound healing and collagen production

  • Promote the development of new blood vessels

  • Help compromised tissue survive

  • Help reduce inflammation and edema

What Does the Research Show?

HBOT's most established role is helping compromised or poorly oxygenated tissue, including threatened surgical flaps and grafts.

A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis of HBOT following aesthetic surgery found encouraging results for healing and postoperative outcomes. However, the research is still limited, and we do not yet have strong evidence showing that every patient benefits from routine HBOT after an uncomplicated cosmetic procedure.

All Hyperbaric Chambers Are NOT the Same

Studies investigating medical HBOT after aesthetic surgery have used substantially elevated atmospheric pressures while patients breathe high concentrations of oxygen. In the 2025 systematic review, treatment pressures ranged from approximately 2.0–3.0 atmospheres absolute (ATA).

Some wellness facilities offer so-called "mild hyperbaric" chambers that operate at considerably lower pressures.

Research performed using medical HBOT protocols cannot automatically be applied to these lower-pressure wellness chambers.

Patients should ask what pressure is being used, what oxygen concentration they will breathe, who is supervising treatment, and whether the facility is providing medical HBOT.

The Bottom Line

HBOT has legitimate medical applications and promising potential after cosmetic surgery, particularly when tissue blood supply or wound healing is compromised. However, the evidence for routine use after uncomplicated cosmetic surgery is still developing, and more high-quality research is needed.
